A Steering Committee was formed in 1980, to implement the formation of what became the Gladesville-Hornsby Women’s Soccer Association (GHWSA). Steering Committee members were:
Growth of Female Football:
In 1881 during the first season there were 23 teams. By the second second this jumped to 30 teams and 6 years later in 1988 there were 40 teams across 18 clubs.
Now 40 years later in 2022 we have 285 female teams (including our PINK team program) registered across 28 clubs.
By 2009, the association had started u8 and u9 “Girls Only” age groups. The Association was also one of very few Associations running single-age girls comps from u8s to u18s. Plus, Over 35 women’s were added in 2009.
Various Name Changes:
Initially, females played under the organisation Gladesville-Hornsby Women’s Soccer Association (GHWSA).
The Association name was changed in 2000 to more accurately reflect the player distribution of GHWSA. After much debate, the name North West Sydney Women’s Soccer was decided upon, then later changed to North West Sydney Women’s Football (NWSWF).
Most recently, North West Sydney Women’s Football (NWSWF) and Gladesville Hornsby Football Association (GHFA) were dissolved in 2019 with the creation of the new joint entity - North West Sydney Football (NWSF).
Leigh Wardell was a Matilda for many years, and was in the 1st Australian side, with cap number 11. Leigh joined NWSWF in 2004, as Coaching Director, and the quality of our Football has leaped ahead since then. Leigh is still on the senior coaching staff of the new merged Association and has been very active over several decades running grass-roots courses, accredited coaching course for the Association and junior elite player development.
Two former Matilda's players Kim Schaefer and Moya Dodd currently play in the 2022 Women's Over 40's competition. Whilst former Matilda's Sharon Dewar (nee Reid) and Carol Vinson were both Australian National Teams players who played their club football for local association clubs.
Ellyse Perry was a local junior player for Beecroft Wombats Football Club, who went on to be a dual international player, representing in Football for the Matilda's and Cricket for the Australian Women's Cricket Team.
